CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT
The goal of the Creative Writer's Studio Certificate is to provide an intensive workshop atmosphere in which students produce creative work with a focus on theory, technique, and practical discipline and examine traditional and contemporary literature from various genres and communities to enhance an understanding of, and appreciation for, the craft of writing as well as its historical and literary contexts. Additionally, this certificate introduces students to current market trends and publishing venues for professional writing.
Program Student Learning Outcomes
- Identify the distinguishing features of each of the following genres: short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating the work of other students, published work, and the student’s own work.
- Employ critical vocabulary for evaluating and reviewing manuscripts.
- Demonstrate understanding of diverse literary models, communities, and conventions.
- Create original works in at least one of the genres.
- Demonstrate understanding of the literary market by preparing manuscripts for submission to a publication or production house.
- Demonstrate competence in performing literary works for a public audience
