This course introduces advanced and high-frequency structures of English and provides practice of these structures. Texts and supplemental materials are used as well as the students' environment. Sounds continue to be practiced orally. Writing and reading reinforce comprehension.

This course aids the students in reproducing the sounds of American English accurately. Attention focuses on the individual needs of the students.

Pronunciation Plus

This is an intensive pronunciation course that includes practice with the sounds of American English in all contexts: syllables, words, sentences, and conversation and an in-depth practice of the stress and intonational patterns of American English. Enunciation (production of sounds with clarity and precision) of American English in varying contexts will be stressed. Each student will be evaluated and assisted with his/her pronunciation difficulties.

ESL Speaking and Listening 2

Recommendation: ESL 10 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher.
This course is a continuation of ESL 10. Students practice oral communication and listening skills. Fluency, correct usage, and syntax are emphasized. Topics are of a more abstract nature.

This course is for ESL students who wish to improve vocabulary skills. Emphasis is on building vocabulary, dictionary skills, and word recognition skills to be used in everyday language and college courses. Students will be introduced to the most frequently used English words and will also learn how to infer meaning from context.

Students study American expressions and American social customs. Students incorporate common expressions in their conversation and writing. Social customs, such as those regarding time, dress, guest behavior, gestures, and selected public encounters, are discussed.

Editing Advanced Grammar/Syntax

This course is designed for the advanced ESL students in writing courses who need help with grammar troublespots that cause difficulties in writing. Rather than provide English grammar review, the course concentrates on rules to help the student apply general principles. It will aid in finding ways to examine and evaluate writing in terms of grammatical accuracy.

TOEFL Preparation Course

This course is intended to prepare students for the TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language) test, which is a requirement for international students entering a North American college or university. The test measures proficiency and academic skills of non-native English speakers at the university-level. Students will review and master each of the language skills on the test to perform academic tasks in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will also learn test-taking strategies and take TOFEL simulation tests to gain experience and confidence leading to better test results. Although this is a comprehensive study course for the exam, it will help prepare all English language learners for taking college and university-level courses.

Prerequisite: ESL 3 or ENGL 100/100S with a grade of "C" or higher or "Pass' or equivalent OR AED 42.17 or equivalent with a grade of "Pass" OR completion of placement process with eligibility for ESL 4/104, ESL 5/105, ESL 120, ESL 152 or ENGL 100/100S.
This is a low-intermediate to intermediate integrated skills course designed to improve academic reading, writing, grammar, and communication skills of non-native speakers of English. Students continue to use the writing process as a means of developing ideas into clear, correct, and effective writing. Critical reading, expository paragraph writing, application of advanced grammar concepts, sentence variety, vocabulary development, and communication skills are taught with teaching methods that facilitate comprehension for English language learners. This course is not open to students enrolled or received credit for ESL 4.

Critical reading, expository paragraph writing, application of advanced grammar concepts, sentence variety, vocabulary development, and communication skills are taught with teaching methods that facilitate comprehension for English language learners. This course is not open to students who enrolled or received credit in ESL 5.

Students continue to use the writing process as a means of developing ideas into clear, correct, and effective writing. Critical reading, summarizing, and expository essay writing are taught with teaching methods that facilitate comprehension for English language learners.

This course is designed to prepare non-native English speakers for college-level writing and for entrance into English 100. Students develop the ability to write clearly, effectively and correctly, using standard American English. Students write a series of compositions that integrate critical reading and thinking, the writing process, and library research. Students continue to develop listening comprehension, speaking skills, grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary to facilitate second language acquisition.

This course incorporates and contextualizes reading and writing strategies to develop expository prose with an emphasis on effective organization and correctness for multilingual/ non-native English-speaking students. Students will read and comprehend sophisticated texts and respond to diverse ideas and perspectives through writing expository and/or persuasive compositions. This course is not open to students currently enrolled in or who have completed ENGL 100 or ENGL 100S.
