Woodworking Technology: Furniture Making (A.S.)

ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE

The Furniture Making program option prepares students for employment in the woodworking industry, primarily in custom furniture shops. Through courses focusing on tables, casegoods, and other forms, students learn how to use traditional woodworking machinery and hand tools. Core topics include furniture design and finishing. Electives include advanced casegoods, advanced tables, advanced hand-tool topics, veneering, and SketchUp. Graduates are employed as furniture makers, general woodworkers, or are self-employed. Spatial intelligence, cognitive ability, and eye-hand coordination are recommended for those entering the program.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students safely and confidently use woodworking tools and equipment to build a furniture project.
  • Students utilize hand tools to augment machine tools used in constructing a furniture project.
  • Students build several furniture projects to meet the requirements of specified planning documents.
  • Students prepare and present a design portfolio, including concept sketches, scale drawings, and a scale model and/or full-sized drawing of several furniture projects.

ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Completion of a minimum of 60 semester units to include

  1. total major requirements,
  2. the general education requirements, and
  3. a grade of "C" or better in all courses required by major.
