Automotive Technology: General Technician (CERT)

CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT

The General Technician Certificate option prepares students for employment as an entry-level automotive technician. Through courses focusing on the mechanical areas of the vehicles, including basics in engines, suspension, and brakes, students learn how to use specialty equipment and hand tools found in automotive service and repair facilities. Core topics include maintenance and service, engine operation, transmission service and repair, and suspension and brakes diagnosis and repair. Design, function, and operation of all these systems is also included in the certificate. Graduates are employed as entry-level technicians, general service technicians, quick service technicians, tire and brake technicians, apprentice technicians, or are self-employed. Cognitive ability and hand-eye coordination are recommended for those entering the program.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate safe practices when working on all types of vehicles.
  • Analyze service information in order to diagnose and repair vehicle faults.
  • Practice repairing faults related to maintenance and light repair (MLR), engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drivetrain and axle, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronics, HVAC, and engine performance.
