CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT

The Certificate of Achievement in Academic English Skills for Multilingual Students supports intermediate and advanced ESL level multilingual and international students to succeed in college-level coursework by developing advanced academic English proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The program focuses on granting students college credit while providing the language and study skills required for academic success in community college programs, transfer-level courses, and career pathways beginning at an intermediate level and moving to high advanced integrative skills.
Through integrated coursework, students strengthen academic vocabulary, critical reading, essay writing, research skills, oral communication, and academic listening. The program also introduces students to academic expectations, learning strategies, and campus resources necessary for success in higher education. These skills support students to complete transfer-level English which applies to associate degrees, career technical education programs, and transfer to four-year universities.
Students are encouraged to work with academic counselors to develop a comprehensive education plan which aligns the certificate with their long-term goals, including associate degree completion, career training programs, or university transfer.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

• Students will produce advanced academic English through oral presentations and well-organized, research-based writing appropriate for CSU–UC transferable coursework.
• Students will apply integrated academic communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to succeed in GE and transfer-level courses to articulate and pursue educational goals aligned with degree, career, and university transfer pathways.
